Vol. 2 No. 1 www.clarence1973.com May 17, 2003

Thirty years ago, the school newspaper was filled up with stories about the athletic exploits of Mark Murphy.

Now, in 2003, he's still making headlines.

Murphy is one of four inductees into the Clarence High School Athletic Wall of Fame. The Wall was established last year; Murphy and three others will be inducted on June 5.

The ceremony will be held at the High School physical education complex (it's out back; the old gym is now a library for those who haven't been there in a while). The ceremony will begin at 8 p.m., followed by a reception.

Murphy moved to Clarence in 1970, and went on to letter in football, basketball and baseball. He was all-league in all three sports, and received state honors in football. Murphy received the Clarence Athlete of the Year award in 1973.

He went on to Colgate, where he played football and baseball, and then joined the Washington Redskins in 1977. Murphy stayed with the Redskins through the 1984 season. He won a Super Bowl in 1982 and was named to the Pro Bowl in 1983.

Murphy received an MBA from American University in 1983 and a law degree from Georgetown University. He currently is the athletics director at Colgate University. Murphy was inducted into the Greater Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame last October.

The other inductees are: Jack Hesslink, athletic director for Clarence schools from 1964 to 1989 and gym teacher for many of the class of 1973; Bob Foth, a marksman from the class of 1976 who competed in three Olympics and won a silver medal in 1992; and Susan Schefer Morgan, a 1977 graduate who went on to win All-American status in track and field at Eastern Kentucky University.

No word yet on when the "media wing" of the Wall of Fame will be opened.
